Artist Spotlight: Spencer Charles

"Spencer Charles is a photographer/creative based in Atlanta, GA, originally from Newark NJ. His work concentrates on photographing artistic nudes and urban culture. Spencer Charles’ work draws inspiration from jazz, hip-hop culture, and 70’s R&B album covers to celebrates the beauty of the Black Woman's body by creating a nostalgic vibe through timeless images. His first photography book, "The Muse Book" showcases, both classically and elegantly, women of color as works of art."

How would you describe your work?

Spencer: I describe my work as modern impressionism. Impressionism is one of my favorite art movements in history. I began learning about impressionism through music when I was younger, studying classical piano. Its all about conveying moods, emotions, the beauty of a moment; making you feel something through the work. I never wanted to tell stories through photos. I just to make you feel something.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

Spencer: Music. I was a musician way before I was a photographer. I find inspiration from all art forms: dance, fashion, literature, visual art, everything. But music speaks to me more than anything else. Also black women inspire me. From my mother to any woman I date, I pull inspiration from them.

What is the biggest obstacle you face creatively?

Spencer: My self-esteem. I'm my biggest critic and obstacle. I doubt myself way too often. I have a really low self-esteem. My lack of confidence holds me back from a lot of opportunities.

What is the lasting impression you want to make on others with your work?

Spencer: I want to inspire everyone who looks at my work. I want people to feel beautiful and empowered. I want to impact urban culture in a positive way.

Why do you create?

Spencer: Because I have to. Every lesson in life i’ve ever learned has been through creating. Through dance, music, paintings, poetry, photography, etc. Every lesson, especially love. There's nothing I understand more in life than harmonies, rhythm, light, movement, etc. I create cause God is a creator. If I wasn't doing photography, i'd be creating through another medium. Creating is the only way I know how to live life.
